Francesco Meneghini and William Bottin: SCIAME 1 (swarm one) Venice, Italy - May 2008 Daydream Fields, Fondazione Buziol/Replay Fast Forward DESCRIPTION Nervous swarm of small luminous objects, fluctuating in an air column their movement generates sound patterns with the aid of a modified Speak & Spell toy. VIDEO download (.m4v) EXPLANATION tiny pieces of paper are attached with thin cotton strings to a fan and float in the air, illumated by neon Wood lights. Their movement influences the magnetic field generated by a theremin antenna. This is then converted to midi signals and sent to a modified TI Speak and Spell toy. The midi flow triggers different rom addresses in the Speak and Spell speech synthesis memory banks generating an ever-changing soundscape of phonetic glitches and word fragments. REQUIREMENTS a sound system (stereo amplified and four speakers), an Electrix MoFX Mk2 unit, all other hardware will be provided by artist. the installation should be place in a small darkened room on its own. BIOS Francesco Meneghini (1977) media artist working with emotions, technology and perception. Between art, logic and nature, Meneghini's work are surprising extraterrestrial objects and perceptual experiences. His work has been presented at: Kunst Museum Basel (2005), Experimenta Design Biennale Lisbona (2005), Plug-In Gallery and Lichfield Gallery, Basel (2006), Centre Pompidou Paris (2006), Qpaq Concert Hall Brisbane Australia (2006). He collaborates with cultural institutions and international artists like Kennedy Foundation, La Fura Dels Baus, Heiner Goebbels, Lucio Dalla, lBiennale di Musica of Venezia and Res Fest. In 2006 he co-founded the internationalcreative studio Heads Collective http://www.fra-me.it William Bottin (1977), musician and sound designer He played and worked cultural institutions including Cannes International Film Festival, Fabrica (Treviso), Villa Manin Centre for Contemporary Art (Udine), International Center for Art and Culture Palazzo Te (Mantua), Speak Truth To Power, Kennedy Memorial Foundation, Strehler Theatre (Milan), Mantova Jazz Festival, Fabbrica Del Vapore (Milan) and collaborated with artists Lucio Dalla, Richard Dorfmeister, Chicken Lips, Donatella Rettore, Chambao and many others. He carried out the sound design for the Spanish Pavilion by Antoni Muntadas at the 51st Biennale of Venice and various art exhibitions such as Gonzaga: La Celeste Galeria (Mantova, 2004), From Chaos To Order and Back (GGG Gallery, Osaka). He recently performed in the occasion of the 6th Festival of Contemporary Dance of Venice Biennale. His music is being released by Eskimo Recordings (Belgium), Italians Do It Better (Usa), Bear Funk (Uk). He's currently writing the soundtrack of the feature film "The Boy With The Sun In His Eyes" (BangorFilms, Usa).
